Why Athletes Peak At Different Ages By Event
The age at which performance peaks varies widely across athletics disciplines because the underlying qualities, from explosive power to accumulated endurance, decline on different timetables.

Athletics contains events that reward qualities with quite different age profiles. That is why a sprinter and a marathon runner can be at opposite stages of their careers at the same age.
Explosive power declines earliest
Sprinting and jumping depend on rapid force production, which relies on fast-twitch muscle and neural recruitment speed that both begin declining relatively early in adulthood.
Training can slow the decline considerably but not reverse it, so sprint careers tend to peak and then fall away over a relatively compressed span.
This is also why sprint careers are vulnerable to a single serious soft-tissue injury, since the recovery period overlaps with years that cannot be regained.
Endurance rewards accumulated years
Distance running depends on cardiovascular capacity, efficiency and the ability to sustain effort, all of which respond to years of consistent training volume.
The adaptation is slow, so an athlete may continue improving well into their thirties as accumulated aerobic development outweighs any decline in raw speed.
Marathon specialists in particular tend to peak later than track distance runners, since the event rewards durability and pacing judgement alongside physiology.
Technical events sit in between
Throws and combined events depend on power but also on refined technique, and technique continues improving after the physical qualities have plateaued.
The two curves overlap, producing a peak that arrives later than a sprinter's and is often sustained longer because small technical gains offset physical decline.
Athletes in these disciplines frequently describe learning the event well into their careers, which is less common where the demand is purely physical.
The career implications are financial
An event with an early peak gives an athlete a short earning window, which must fund both the career and the transition afterwards.
Later-peaking events allow a longer accumulation but require sustaining costs through years when results have not yet arrived.
Funding systems that assess athletes on current results tend to suit the first group and to withdraw support from the second before they mature.
Why athletes change events
Moving up in distance is a common response to declining speed, since endurance qualities remain while explosive ones fade.
The transition takes years of retraining and rarely happens quickly enough to prevent a gap in results and therefore in funding.
Athletes who plan the move in advance, building endurance volume before it is required, tend to manage it far better than those who react to a decline after it appears.
