Why the one-lap sprint is lost in its third hundred metres
A full-lap sprint is decided by how much speed a runner can afford to spend early, and the section where that decision is repaid is the one furthest from the finish line.

An event between two systems
A full-lap sprint is too long to be run at absolute maximum speed and too short for a runner to settle into a sustainable rhythm. The body supplies energy for such an effort from sources that deplete rapidly and cannot be replenished during the race itself. That places the athlete in a position of spending a fixed and inadequate budget across a distance that will exhaust it before the end.
Every runner slows in the closing stages, so the contest is really about who slows least rather than who finishes fastest. Understanding the event as a managed decline rather than as a sustained sprint explains almost everything about how it is run.
Why the early pace is a debt
Running the opening stretch faster than necessary consumes the limited energy supply at a rate the closing stretch cannot afford. The cost is not paid immediately, which is what makes the error so easy to commit and so difficult to feel at the time. It appears instead in the third quarter, where the accumulated deficit converts into a sudden and visible loss of speed.
Runners who lead comfortably at the halfway point and fade badly have usually made this exact trade without recognising it. The skill is therefore in restraint during a phase where restraint produces no immediate reward and a good deal of positional discomfort.
What happens through the third quarter
By this point the fastest available energy pathways have been substantially depleted and the body is shifting toward slower ones. That shift cannot supply energy at the rate the effort requires, so speed begins to fall regardless of the athlete's intention. Byproducts of the effort accumulate in the working muscle and interfere with the contraction the runner is attempting to sustain.
The subjective experience is one of running harder while moving slower, which is precisely what the underlying physiology would predict. Athletes who arrive at this section with a smaller deficit hold their speed longer, and the gaps in the field open here.
The finish is a consequence, not a contest
Positions in the closing stretch are usually determined by decisions made much earlier in the race rather than by any late effort. A runner who appears to accelerate at the end is almost always decelerating more slowly than those around him. This is why finishing kicks in the event look different from those in longer races, where genuine acceleration is still available.
Coaching therefore concentrates on the transition into the third quarter and on maintaining sound mechanics as speed inevitably falls. Holding form matters because deteriorating mechanics waste energy at exactly the moment when none of it remains to be wasted.
Why lane position complicates it
Running in an outer lane means starting ahead of the field and having no visual information about where anyone else is. Running in an inner lane means seeing runners ahead throughout and facing tighter curves that cost speed through the turns. Both situations invite pacing errors, in one case through running blind and in the other through chasing a rival's early pace.
Experienced runners execute a predetermined plan and treat the rest of the field as largely irrelevant until the final stretch. That discipline is difficult to hold, and it is the clearest differentiator between athletes with similar raw speed.
