How pacing collapses in a distance race before the legs do
Runners rarely fall apart because they have run out of physical capacity; they fall apart because they spent too much of it early, and the accounting only becomes visible much later.

Why even pacing is efficient
Running at a steady speed allows the body to supply energy through pathways that can be sustained for a long period without accumulating problems. Every surge above that speed draws on faster pathways that deplete quickly and produce byproducts the body must then clear. Clearing those byproducts takes time and capacity that would otherwise have gone into maintaining the pace of the race.
A runner who surges and recovers repeatedly therefore pays a cost that a runner holding a steady effort never incurs. The efficiency argument is why coaches spend so much time on pace discipline even with athletes who have obvious physical talent.
The delayed bill
The cost of running too fast early does not present itself immediately, which is why the error feels comfortable while it is being made. The runner feels strong because the fast pathways are still supplying energy freely and the accumulated interference is still small. By the time the sensation changes, the deficit has already been created and no adjustment in pace can recover what was spent.
What follows is a decline that appears sudden but was determined several minutes earlier, in a stretch that felt easy at the time. This is why experienced runners are suspicious of feeling good in the opening section of a long race.
What the pack does to individual judgement
Racing in a group provides shelter from air resistance and a rhythm to follow, both of which are genuine advantages. It also removes the runner's independent sense of pace, replacing it with whatever the group happens to be doing at that moment. When the group surges, following is easier than deciding not to, and the decision to follow is made in a fraction of a second.
Runners therefore make pacing errors collectively that none of them would have made alone with a watch and a plan. The tactical skill in a championship race is largely the skill of choosing which surges to answer and which to let go.
Why the finish looks like a different race
Once several runners have overspent, the closing stages become a contest between athletes who are all decelerating at different rates. A runner who paced conservatively can appear to accelerate dramatically while actually maintaining the speed held throughout. The dramatic finishes that define distance racing are therefore often produced by the errors of others rather than by any late surge.
Athletes with a genuine finishing sprint hold an additional advantage, but only if they arrive at the finish with capacity remaining. Getting there with something left is a pacing outcome, which is why the sprint is usually decided long before it begins.
What conditions do to the calculation
Heat raises the internal cost of the same pace, which means a plan built in cool conditions becomes an overspend when it is warm. Course profile matters too, since running hard up an incline is expensive and running hard down one damages the legs for later. Wind changes the sheltering value of the pack and can make sitting behind others worth considerably more than usual.
Runners who adjust their target for conditions are not lowering their ambition; they are keeping the same plan under different arithmetic. Those who hold a fixed target regardless of conditions are the ones most likely to experience the collapse that follows an overspend.
