The stride count is the event

Hurdle races place barriers at fixed intervals, which means the athlete must cover the same distance between each of them with the same number of strides. That requirement converts a sprint into a rhythm task, since the stride length is prescribed by the geometry rather than chosen by the runner. An athlete whose natural stride does not fit the interval must either stretch or shorten every stride throughout the race.

Both adjustments cost speed, because a stride that is not the athlete's natural length is less efficient at converting effort into forward motion. The event therefore rewards athletes whose sprinting mechanics happen to align with the spacing as much as it rewards raw speed.

Why the take-off distance matters

Clearing a barrier requires taking off at a specific distance in front of it, far enough to clear but close enough to avoid rising too high. Taking off too close forces the athlete upward rather than forward, which converts horizontal speed into vertical travel that serves no purpose. Taking off too far away means descending onto the barrier and either striking it or landing awkwardly beyond it.

The window is narrow, and hitting it depends entirely on arriving with the correct stride pattern from the previous hurdle. This is why an error at one barrier immediately threatens the next rather than being absorbed in the gap between them.

How an error propagates

A hurdler who takes off slightly wrong lands in a position that alters the strides available before the following barrier. The athlete must then chop or stretch to restore the pattern, and both actions reduce speed at the moment speed is most needed. If the correction is incomplete, the next take-off is also compromised, and the disturbance carries forward through the race.

Recovering fully usually requires two or three barriers, by which point a considerable amount of time has been surrendered. This propagation explains why hurdle races are so often decided by a single mistake rather than by accumulated superiority.

What clearance technique is for

Good hurdle technique is not about jumping well; it is about spending as little time in the air as the barrier permits. The lead leg is driven forward rather than upward, and the trail leg is pulled through quickly so that ground contact resumes early. The trunk leans forward to keep the centre of mass low, which reduces the height the body has to travel and shortens the flight.

Every element of the technique is therefore aimed at minimising interruption to the sprint rather than at clearing the obstacle safely. Athletes who treat the barrier as something to jump over lose time at every one of them.

Why fatigue changes the pattern late

As the race progresses, stride length shortens naturally with fatigue, which threatens the fixed count between barriers. Athletes must then apply more effort simply to maintain the pattern, which accelerates the fatigue that caused the problem. Some switch their lead leg or add a stride in the closing stages, both of which cost time but prevent a more serious breakdown.

The decision has to be made instantly and under load, which is why it is rehearsed extensively rather than improvised. Races are frequently decided in this final section, where the contest is between deteriorating patterns rather than between top speeds.
