Why home advantage at a tournament is mostly a travel effect
Crowd support is the explanation everyone reaches for, but the measurable benefits of hosting come from familiarity, shorter journeys and the absence of adaptation that every visiting squad must absorb.

The base camp advantage
A host nation prepares at facilities its players already know, with staff, food and routines that require no adjustment whatsoever. Visiting squads spend part of their preparation adapting to unfamiliar surroundings, and every hour spent adapting is an hour not spent recovering or training. The difference is small on any single day, and it accumulates steadily across the several weeks that a major tournament occupies.
It matters most in the later rounds, when the margin between squads has narrowed and recovery has become the binding constraint. None of this is glamorous, which is why it rarely features in the explanations offered for why hosts so often perform above expectation.
Journeys between matches
Tournaments held across large territories require teams to travel between venues, sometimes across substantial distances and time zones. A host side more often plays within a limited set of locations, and its journeys between them are shorter and far more predictable. Travel disrupts sleep, and sleep remains the single most effective recovery process available to any athlete at any level of the sport.
A squad that sleeps well between matches retains more of its capacity for repeated high-intensity efforts than one that does not. This is a physiological advantage arising from a logistical circumstance, and it operates regardless of who is in the stadium.
Climate and altitude are already solved
Adapting to heat requires a sustained period of consistent exposure, and adapting properly to elevation requires a considerably longer one still. A host squad has completed that adaptation over years of living and training in the conditions, without spending any preparation time on it. Visiting sides must either arrive early, which costs them time with their clubs, or accept a penalty in the opening matches.
Partial adaptation can be worse than none, since a squad may arrive mid-process and carry the fatigue of adapting into the competition. The advantage is therefore largest where the host conditions differ most from those the visiting squads normally experience.
What the crowd actually contributes
A supportive crowd raises arousal, which can improve simple physical output while making fine motor tasks slightly less reliable. The effect is genuine but modest, and it applies to both sides, since a hostile atmosphere can also sharpen a visiting team's focus. The more reliable crowd effect operates on officials, whose judgements in ambiguous situations tend to drift with the reaction around them.
That drift is small and applies mainly to genuinely marginal decisions rather than to obvious ones, so its overall influence is firmly bounded. It is nonetheless real, and it compounds with the logistical advantages already described rather than replacing any of them.
Why the advantage is not guaranteed
Hosting also imposes costs, including public expectation, constant media attention and a domestic schedule frequently disrupted by preparation for the event itself. Squads assembled under intense public pressure sometimes play more cautiously than their quality warrants, which offsets part of the benefit. The logistical advantages accrue automatically, whereas the psychological ones depend on how a particular group handles scrutiny.
This is why hosting improves the odds without determining the outcome, and why some hosts underperform despite every structural benefit. Separating the mechanical advantages from the atmospheric ones explains far more than treating home advantage as a single quantity.
