Heat and altitude change a match by changing the pressing decision
Environmental conditions are usually mentioned as a hardship, but their concrete tactical effect is to make sustained pressing unaffordable, which reshapes everything downstream of that choice.

Why heat is a circulatory problem
Working muscle generates heat, and the body sheds it primarily by moving blood to the skin and by evaporating sweat from its surface. In hot, humid conditions evaporation becomes less effective, so more blood is diverted to the skin and less remains available to the muscle. The same running therefore costs more internally, and the capacity for repeated hard efforts declines faster than it would in cool conditions.
Players notice it first as a reluctance to make the second and third sprint in a sequence rather than as any dramatic collapse. That reluctance is precisely what a pressing scheme cannot tolerate, since pressing depends on repeated efforts made together.
Why altitude is a different problem
At elevation the air contains fewer oxygen molecules per breath, which reduces how quickly the body can restore itself between efforts. Sustained running is affected less than repeated sprinting, because it is the recovery between bursts that depends most on oxygen delivery. Visiting teams therefore find the first half manageable and the second increasingly difficult as the deficit between efforts accumulates.
The ball also travels further and faster through thinner air, which changes the length of passes and the behaviour of shots. Both effects favour the side that trains regularly in those conditions, and the advantage is physiological rather than psychological.
What a side does when pressing is unaffordable
Unable to press high for long, a team must defend from a deeper starting position and concede territory it would normally contest. That changes where turnovers occur, moving them from near the opponent's goal to near its own, which lengthens every counterattack. Longer counterattacks require different players, favouring those who can carry the ball over distance rather than those who receive in tight areas.
The team also needs a forward who can hold possession alone, since support will arrive slowly from a deep starting position. One environmental constraint therefore propagates into shape, personnel and the type of chance the side can realistically create.
Managing the match rather than the conditions
Sides playing in extreme conditions organise the match around a small number of intense periods rather than a constant level of effort. They will press at defined moments, such as after a goal kick or immediately following their own attacking phase, and drop off otherwise. Keeping the ball becomes a recovery tool as much as an attacking one, since possession forces the opponent to do the running.
Set pieces and stoppages acquire additional value because they provide the only genuine pauses available within the match. None of this is visible as a tactical system on a team sheet, yet it governs the rhythm of the entire contest.
Why preparation only goes so far
Adaptation to heat develops over a sustained period of consistent exposure, which national sides assembling shortly before a tournament rarely have available. Altitude adaptation takes longer still, and partial exposure can leave a squad worse off than either full preparation or none at all. Staff therefore focus on the controllable elements, including hydration strategy, cooling during breaks and the scheduling of training.
These measures reduce the penalty without removing it, and the side accustomed to the conditions retains a genuine advantage. Treating that advantage as unfair misses the point; it is simply another condition of the ground, like a surface or a slope.
