Why offensive rhythm dies when the pace changes, not when shots miss
A stalled attack is usually diagnosed as poor shooting, but the more common cause is a change in tempo that leaves the offence executing its patterns at the wrong speed.

Offensive actions are timing devices
A screen is only useful if the player using it arrives at the moment the screener is set and the defender is committed. Arriving early means running into a screen that has not yet been established, and arriving late means the defender has already adjusted. The window is short, and it is measured in the rhythm of the possession rather than in any absolute unit of time.
When the tempo of the possession changes, every one of those windows shifts, and the actions no longer fit together. The offence continues to run its patterns while producing none of the advantages the patterns were designed to create.
What changes the tempo
A run of stoppages, a defensive adjustment or a change in personnel can all alter the speed at which a possession unfolds. Playing from behind changes it too, since urgency compresses the time an offence is willing to spend setting up its actions. Players hurrying through a pattern arrive at each point slightly early, which is as damaging as arriving late and harder to notice.
The possession still looks organised on the surface, but the small separations the actions were meant to create do not appear. Coaches call a timeout in these situations less to draw a play than to reset the speed at which the team is operating.
Why missed shots are the symptom
A shot taken without the advantage the offence was designed to create is a harder shot, and harder shots go in less often. The team therefore experiences a run of misses that appears to be a shooting problem and is actually a timing problem. Responding by shooting less confidently only makes it worse, since hesitation further disrupts the rhythm of each of the following possessions.
Responding by attempting more difficult individual shots also fails, because it abandons the structure without fixing the tempo. The correct response is to slow down and re-establish the sequence, which is deeply counterintuitive when a team is behind.
The defensive contribution
Defences deliberately disrupt tempo by pressuring the ball early, by denying the first pass and by switching coverages between possessions. Each of those forces the offence to spend time before it can begin its intended action, which compresses everything that remains. A compressed possession has fewer options available and must be completed at a speed the players have not practised together.
This is why full-court pressure is effective even when it does not produce turnovers, since it taxes the time available. The defence is attacking the clock rather than the ball, and the resulting shots are worse without anything visible having happened.
Why substitutions matter here
Players who have practised an action together develop a shared sense of its timing that does not transfer automatically to a replacement. Changing one player in a five-player action alters the rhythm of the whole sequence, even when the replacement executes correctly. Coaches therefore substitute in groups wherever possible, preserving established combinations rather than optimising for individual quality alone.
It also explains why a team can look disjointed with a stronger lineup on the floor than with a weaker but more familiar one. Familiarity is itself a form of timing, and timing is what most offensive systems are actually selling to a coach.
