Why switching trades a fast problem for a slow one
Exchanging assignments on a screen removes the immediate danger and creates a different one, and which of the two a defence prefers depends entirely on the opponent it is facing.

What a screen is trying to create
A screen places a body in the path of a defender so that the ball handler gains a step and an unobstructed view of the basket. That advantage exists for a very short time, and the offence must use it immediately before the defence recovers its position. Traditional coverages ask the screened defender to fight through or go around, both of which take time the offence intends to exploit.
The alternative is for the two defenders to exchange assignments, which eliminates the need to navigate the screen entirely. Switching therefore solves the immediate problem more completely than any other coverage a defence has available to it.
The mismatch it creates
After a switch, a defender is guarding an opponent he was not assigned to and may be poorly suited to handle. A larger defender guarding a quick ball handler is vulnerable to being beaten off the dribble in open space. A smaller defender guarding a larger opponent near the basket is vulnerable to being scored over rather than around.
Neither situation is immediately dangerous, which is the point, but both become dangerous if the offence is patient enough to attack them. The defence has therefore converted an urgent threat into a slower one that unfolds over the following several seconds.
Why the trade is often worth it
Offences are built to punish momentary advantages, and many actions lose their value entirely once that initial separation has been denied to them. A defence that switches consistently forces the opponent into isolation, which is generally a less efficient way to score. It also simplifies communication, since every screen produces the same response and there are fewer decisions to make under pressure.
That simplicity matters over a long match, because complex coverages fail most often through miscommunication rather than through poor execution. Teams with defenders of similar size across several positions can switch almost everything and give up very little in the exchange.
When it becomes unaffordable
Against an opponent with a genuinely dominant player near the basket, a switch that produces a size mismatch is an invitation. Against a very quick ball handler, a switch that leaves a slower defender isolated on the perimeter is equally exploitable. Offences will therefore screen deliberately with the specific player whose defender they want to relocate, which is called hunting a matchup.
Defences respond by switching selectively, by sending a second defender at the mismatch, or by returning to the original assignments when possible. Each response reintroduces the complexity that switching was adopted to avoid, which is why no coverage is stable for a whole match.
Why personnel decides the policy
A team can only switch across positions where its defenders are close enough in size and speed to survive the exchange. Building a roster that permits this is a deliberate choice, made at the cost of specialists who might be more effective in narrower roles. Teams without that flexibility must use more complicated coverages, which demand more preparation and produce more breakdowns over a long match.
The defensive scheme is therefore downstream of the roster rather than something a coach selects independently of the players available. Evaluating a defence without accounting for who is on it explains very little about why it does what it does.
