Why a closed roof turns a grass court into a different surface
Covering a court changes air, light and moisture at once, and the combined effect alters ball behaviour enough that players routinely have to revise tactics mid-match.

What closing a roof actually changes
Enclosing a court traps warm air, removes wind entirely and alters the humidity of the space around the playing surface. Each of those affects the ball, which travels differently through still, warm air than it does through moving cool air outdoors. Lighting changes as well, since artificial light produces different contrast and shadow than daylight does across a uniformly green surface.
The court itself begins to dry, because the grass is no longer exposed to dew or to the moisture in outside air. The combination produces conditions that resemble an indoor court more than the outdoor grass the players began on.
Ball flight without wind
Wind is the largest source of unpredictability in outdoor play, affecting every ball to a degree that varies from point to point. Removing it makes flight paths repeatable, which benefits players whose games depend on precise depth and margin over the net. Servers gain because a toss can be placed identically every time, and the toss is the foundation of a consistent delivery.
Players who use heavy rotation lose an ally, since wind exaggerates the movement their spin creates and stillness removes that amplification. The advantage therefore shifts toward flat, precise hitting and away from games built on shaping the ball through the air.
Bounce under a closed roof
A drying surface becomes firmer, and a firmer surface returns more of the ball's energy on impact, which lifts the bounce slightly. Warmer air also makes the ball itself livelier, since both the internal pressure and the material of the cover respond to temperature. The two effects usually combine to produce a court that plays a little quicker and a little truer than it did in the open air.
Players describe it as the ball coming through, and the description matches what the conditions would be expected to produce. Adjusting means moving the court position slightly backwards and expecting a marginally higher contact point than a few minutes earlier.
Why the transition is difficult
The change happens within a match, so players must revise a set of expectations they have spent an hour or more calibrating. Calibration is largely unconscious, built from hundreds of repeated contacts, and it cannot be reset simply by deciding to reset it. The period immediately after a roof closes therefore produces more errors than the changed conditions themselves would ever explain.
Players who anticipate the change and simplify their targets during the transition lose fewer points than those who continue as before. The advantage goes to whoever recalibrates faster, which is a genuine skill rather than an accident of preference.
What it does to the atmosphere
An enclosed stadium retains sound rather than letting it escape, so crowd noise is louder and takes longer to fade. That changes the acoustic information a player receives from the ball's contact, which is a real if rarely discussed source of feedback. It also raises arousal, which tends to sharpen gross physical output while making delicate touch shots slightly less reliable.
Players who rely on feel around the net therefore face conditions that are technically easier and perceptually noisier at the same time. The net effect varies considerably by player, which is exactly why the closing of a roof produces matches that turn on it.
