Deceleration is the limiting factor

Reaching a ball requires accelerating toward it and then stopping in balance to strike, and the second half is where grass creates difficulty. Stopping demands friction between the shoe and the surface, and a living, sometimes damp surface supplies that friction inconsistently. A player who cannot trust the stop will decelerate earlier and more gradually, which means arriving later and with less margin.

That caution is often mistaken for a lack of speed, when the athlete is simply managing a surface that punishes commitment. The skill of grass-court movement is therefore mostly the skill of stopping confidently on an unreliable footing.

Why steps get shorter

Long strides place the body's weight far from its base of support, which requires a large braking force to arrest. Shorter steps keep the weight closer to the feet and allow a change of direction to be made across several small adjustments. The trade-off is that covering the same distance takes more steps and therefore more time, which shrinks the court a player can defend.

Grass specialists compensate by anticipating earlier, since starting sooner is the only way to recover the time that shorter steps consume. Watching a player's stride length is consequently a reliable indicator of how much they trust the surface underfoot.

Lowering the centre of mass

A lower body position increases stability and shortens the distance the centre of mass must travel to change direction. It also brings the eyes closer to the height at which the ball will be struck, which matters on a surface that keeps the bounce low. Maintaining that position is physically costly, since holding a flexed knee and hip through long rallies loads the muscles continuously.

Players unaccustomed to it tire in a way that does not show up in their running but appears in the quality of their contact. This is part of why a short grass season is demanding out of proportion to the number of matches it contains.

Sliding as a technique rather than an accident

A controlled slide converts a sudden stop into a gradual one, spreading the braking force over a longer distance and a longer time. On grass this is more difficult than on clay, because the surface offers less predictable release and can grip suddenly mid-slide. Players who slide on grass do so with a straighter leg and a shorter distance, treating it as a final adjustment rather than a movement pattern.

The technique reduces load on a single joint by distributing it, but it demands a level of confidence that only builds with exposure. Attempting it without that exposure is how players end up in positions their bodies were not prepared to absorb.

Why the surface changes underfoot

Grass wears through an event, and the worn areas offer a different grip from the intact areas a step away. Moisture changes it again, with damp blades becoming slick in a way that dry ones are not, particularly early and late in a day. Players therefore recalibrate continuously rather than settling into a movement pattern for the duration of a match.

That recalibration consumes attention, which is one reason grass matches feel more demanding than their rally lengths suggest. The players who look most comfortable are usually the ones who have simply spent the most time learning what the surface will give them.
