Why grass produces a low bounce

When a ball lands, friction between the surface and the ball converts some forward speed into rotation and upward movement. Grass provides relatively little of that friction, so more of the ball's forward speed survives the bounce and less is redirected upward. The result is a ball that stays low and arrives quickly, giving the receiving player noticeably less time than on a coarser surface.

The living blades also flatten under load, which absorbs some energy and contributes to the sensation that the ball skids rather than sits up. This combination is what makes grass distinctive, and it is why the surface rewards early preparation and compact, efficient strokes.

The soil underneath does half the work

A grass court is grown on a soil base that is rolled to a specified firmness before an event begins. That firmness determines how much the surface yields on impact, and a harder base produces a faster and more consistent bounce. Moisture in the soil changes the firmness, which is why a court plays differently after rain even once the surface itself is dry.

Groundstaff manage the base as carefully as the grass, because the base is the component that governs consistency over a long event. Players sensing an unusual bounce are often reacting to the soil rather than to anything visible in the grass above it.

Wear changes the court unevenly

The areas behind the baselines and around the service boxes receive far more traffic than the rest of the court. As the grass thins there, the ball begins to interact with exposed soil, which grips more and produces a higher, slower bounce. The court therefore becomes inconsistent rather than uniformly slower, with worn patches behaving differently from the intact areas beside them.

That inconsistency is more difficult to handle than a straightforwardly slow surface, because the player cannot rely on a single expectation. It also rewards players who watch the bounce late and adjust, rather than those who commit early on the basis of experience.

Why the second week differs

By the later stages of a long event, the courts have absorbed substantial play and the worn areas have become pronounced. Serve-and-volley tactics that were effective on a fresh surface become less reliable when the ball sits up off a bare patch. Baseline players who struggled with the initial skid find the conditions increasingly familiar as the bounce climbs toward what they know.

This is one reason results across a grass event can appear to shift character, without any change in the players themselves. Anyone reading a grass court therefore has to account for how much play the surface has already absorbed during the event.

Weather as an amplifier

Warm, dry conditions harden the base and dry the blades, which produces the fastest and lowest bounce the court will offer. Damp air softens everything, slows the ball through the air and makes the grass itself more slippery underfoot. A humid evening can therefore turn a quick court into a cautious one within the space of a single session.

Players adjust their court position rather than their strokes, standing closer or further back to restore a comfortable contact point. The surface has not changed materially; the conditions acting on it have, and the tactical consequences follow directly.
