The dismissal is the last event, not the first

A collapse is usually read backwards from the wickets, which makes the deliveries that took them look like the cause of everything that followed. The more useful sequence begins several overs earlier, when a batting side quietly stops scoring and nobody is dismissed for it. Once the run rate falls without wickets falling, the batting side has already conceded the initiative even though the scorecard shows no damage at all.

Bowlers respond to that silence by tightening their lines rather than hunting for wickets, because a settled batter denied runs eventually manufactures a mistake. By the time the first wicket falls, the pressure that produced it has been building long enough to make the second and third considerably likelier.

How a scoring drought changes shot selection

Batters do not decide to stop scoring; they run out of low-risk options and adjust their intent without announcing the change to anyone. A defensive stretch narrows the range of shots a batter still trusts, and the shots that remain are the ones with the smallest margin for error. The longer that stretch runs, the more attractive a release shot becomes, because the alternative is another maiden and a further tightening of the field.

Release shots played out of frustration are struck with a different tempo from release shots played by choice, and the difference shows in the contact. That is why a collapse so often contains one dismissal that looks reckless in isolation but is entirely predictable when read in sequence.

Field settings that shrink the scoring map

A captain sensing a drought moves fielders into the areas the batters have already shown they prefer, which removes the safe singles first. Removing singles is more damaging than removing boundaries, because singles rotate the strike and keep a set batter facing the bowler he reads best. With the strike stuck, the weaker of the two batters faces a disproportionate share of deliveries from the bowler causing the most trouble.

The field then bulges toward catching positions, so every attacking shot must clear a ring placed exactly where the batter most wants to hit. None of this appears in the scorecard, yet it explains how a batting side can look becalmed for an hour and then lose four wickets in twenty minutes.

Why each new batter inherits a harder problem

A batter walking in during a collapse faces the same bowlers with none of the acclimatisation the dismissed batter had spent an hour accumulating. He arrives with a scoreboard demanding runs and a field arranged to deny them, which are contradictory instructions delivered at the worst possible moment. New batters are also at their most vulnerable to lateral movement, because the eye has not yet calibrated to the pace of the surface or the light.

Bowlers know this, so they hold their best delivery back for the first few balls a new batter faces rather than spending it on a set one. The result is a compounding sequence in which every wicket makes the next wicket cheaper, which is precisely what a collapse looks like from outside.

Reading the innings backwards

Anyone reconstructing a collapse should start at the last over in which the batting side scored freely and then work forward from there. The interval between that over and the first dismissal usually contains the decision that mattered, whether a bowling change or a quiet field adjustment. It also contains the moment the batting side accepted the drought instead of breaking it, which is a choice even when nobody articulates it aloud.

Collapses look like accidents because they are compressed into a short window, but the conditions for them are laid down slowly and in plain view. The ball that takes the first wicket is simply the point at which an accumulated disadvantage finally becomes a number on the board.
