Where a nick actually travels

An edge is a glancing contact, so the ball leaves the bat with a fraction of its original energy and a heavily altered direction. How far it carries depends on the pace of the delivery, the angle of the bat face at contact and whether the ball was struck rising or falling. Those variables are reasonably predictable for a given bowler on a given surface, which is why a cordon can be placed rather than guessed.

Catches that appear miraculous are usually the ones taken by a fielder standing exactly where the arithmetic of that bowler's edges puts the ball. Chances that fall short or fly over are the ones where the placement was inherited from a previous bowler and never adjusted.

Depth as a function of pace and surface

A quick bowler on a hard surface produces edges that carry a long way, so the cordon stands deep enough to keep the ball in front of the hands. The same depth against a slower bowler leaves catches dying in front of the fielders, and each of those is a wicket the bowling side has simply given away. Bounce complicates the calculation, because a surface with steep bounce sends edges higher and shorter rather than flat and long.

Good cordons therefore change depth between bowlers within the same over-to-over rhythm, and the change is often only a couple of paces. Those couple of paces are the difference between a chance held comfortably and a chance that never reaches anybody at all.

Why spin changes the angles

Edges off spin are generated at much lower ball speed, so they travel short distances and often arrive close to the ground. The catchers move in accordingly, which is why a slip to a spinner stands within touching distance of the wicketkeeper. The direction changes as well, since a ball turning away from the bat produces a thicker edge that travels squarer than a seam edge does.

That is why a spinner's cordon is arranged with a slip and a wide catcher rather than a chain of fielders in a straight line. Captains who leave a pace cordon in place when the spinner comes on are effectively fielding with two players in irrelevant positions.

What standing wrong actually costs

A misplaced cordon does not merely miss the occasional chance; it changes the bowler's willingness to bowl the deliveries that produce edges. Bowlers who watch nicks fall short begin to pitch fuller, seeking the stumps instead, and that shortens the length at which they were succeeding. The batting side reads the shortened threat immediately and starts driving with more confidence, which relieves the pressure the spell had built.

In that way, a placement error propagates into the bowling plan and the scoring rate long after the dropped or unreachable chance itself. The cost is therefore always larger than the single opportunity that a scorecard would record as missed.

Why cordons drift through a session

Fielders standing in position for a long period gradually creep, usually forward, because the instinct under concentration is to close the distance to the bat. Nobody notices the drift, since each fielder moves relative to the others and the shape of the cordon remains superficially intact. The wicketkeeper is best placed to correct it, which is why keepers spend so much of a session resetting the line and depth of the players beside them.

Surfaces also change within a day, losing pace as the ball softens and the moisture leaves, and a cordon set at the start becomes wrong by tea. Sides that reset deliberately at each interval catch more, not because their hands improve but because their arithmetic is refreshed.
